Master of Philosophy [M.Phill.]

Overview

The full form of M.Phil is the Master of Philosophy; it is a pure research degree, it is an advanced postgraduate degree, which is a mixture of both taught portion and  a significant research portion of subjects which concludes with a monitored thesis project conducted under supervision. Finally, an MPhil degree is awarded to the students on completion of their taught coursework and successful submission of their two years of original research work.

MPhil or Master of Philosophy is a postgraduate academic research programme degree that is of two years duration, It is in it’s own right and it will give you a similar skill set to a PhD programme. Candidates from any stream can pursue this degree course like – Humanities, Commerce, Science, Law, Teaching etc. In an MPhil course, aspirants need to study theory as well as practical subjects, as studying this course is an achievement and a significant piece of advanced research skills and experience which are valued by a range of employers. In the complete course, candidates need to conduct research, method development, testing of the existing theories and present their research findings. After completing the course candidates can further pursue a highly research based PhD programme.

Like those who want to pursue an MPhil programme need to have a deep interest and knowledge in the subject that they want to pursue. Apart from this candidates should have skills like Good Analytical Skills, Reasoning Skills, very Dedicated, Hard-Working, should have Good Writing Capacity, very Keen Observer, they should have Good interest in Research, very Organised, Inquisitive, and Self-Motivated. Phil program aims to transform Post Graduates into Research Scholars, an integrated theory and practical course to carry out research and Prepare research proposals, It is a pre-doctorate degree course which is mainly based on research.

Eligibility

M.Phil. Eligibility Criteria:

The criteria vary in different universities, however, the basic eligibility criteria for candidates is they need to have secured at least 55% marks at post graduation degree level in a related field/subject in which they want to pursue an MPhil course.

Depending upon the university from where the candidates want to take admission in,  some university shortlist students for the admission in an MPhil course on the basis of their entrance exam followed by a Personal Interview (PI) round.

NOTE – The entrance exam & personal interview totally depends upon the university you are taking admission in, not all universities take entrance exams and interviews for admission. Management Quota is available in some universities for direct admission.

Course Structure

  • Need to take 4 out of many specified papers on advanced topics and on research methodology and then submit a dissertation or undertake a project work.
  • The 1st year is for course studies and delivers at least one seminar. The 2nd year is for dissertation and term papers.
  • Students required to undertake course work for a minimum period of one semester of six months duration. This course work must include research methodology which may include quantitative methods and computer application methodology. They can also review published research in the relevant field.
  • The course structure is so designed that not only it enhances the capacity to take up research but it also helps the students for in depth understanding of the subject/field, for discussing new results and developments in their chosen subject/field, the candidate shall deliver at least 2 seminars.
  • An M.Phil. in a Clinical Psychology course is to be conducted under the norms of  RCI rule and accepted as an exception.

    Master of Philosophy degrees have plenty of options nationally and as well as internationally.
